10 Gospel Songs for Easter Sunday

black-choir-singing

Every year at Holy Week, I look forward to the joyous Gospel songs for Easter Sunday.

They are always uplifting and inspiring, but especially on Easter Sunday – a day of joyous celebration.

In the spirit of Easter, I put together a list of songs that have brought me joy over the years. It also includes a few I heard for the first time while creating this blog post.

Music has the power to heal and bring people together – the same as Jesus. Easter is a reminder for us to not lose hope and to always have faith. That even in the darkest of times, light will always be on its way.

Check out some of my favorite Gospel songs for Easter Sunday.

Celebrate (He Lives)” by Fred Hammond

This is one of my favorite songs by Fred Hammond. I love the storytelling and its soulful nature. It’s also special to me because the first time I heard it was when my brother sung it at Easter Vigil Mass some years ago.

Christ Did It All” by Hezekiah Walker

I’ve enjoyed Hezekiah Walker’s upbeat songs over the years, and this is no different. This is probably my favorite Easter song that I didn’t grow up with in church. For me, this is a celebration song for Jesus – after all the pain and suffering he experienced, he made it through for all of us. There’s no greater love!

Don’t Cry” by Kirk Franklin

This is a classic by Kirk Franklin. While it speaks directly to those awaiting Jesus after his crucifixion, it speaks to those who are weary and worried in life.

God So Loved the World” by Vanessa Bell Armstrong

This is a home church classic. While it’s not as upbeat as some of the other songs on this list, it has a true Easter joy you can hear and feel when you sing it.

Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus” by Quincy Jones with the All Star Chorus

The “Easter Hallelujah” is one of my favorite songs. Whether I hear it at the Easter Vigil or on Easter Sunday, I always feel blessed, grateful, and filled with the Holy Spirit.

There are many variations of the song, but this version is a home church classic and one of my favorites.

“Oh Happy Day” from Sister Act 2

This had to be one of my favorite Gospel songs when I was growing up – probably because I watched Sister Act 2 movie so many times.

Easter is definitely a happy day, and this song is sure to lift your spirits. You can listen to the original version by The Edwin Hawkins Singers or enjoy the version from Sister Act 2 below.

Side note: Sister Act 3 is on its way!

He Got Up” by Vashawn Mitchell

I found this song as I was making this blog post. This song will get you excited for Easter. It’s upbeat, joyous and the choir is fantastic.

Hosanna” by Kirk Franklin

This is one of my favorite Kirk Franklin songs, period. I love it because it is uplifting and gives glory to God for all that He has done for us. It also paints a beautiful picture of Heaven.

Matthew 28” by Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers

I also found this song while making this blog post. I’ve never heard a Gospel song where the entire story of Jesus’ resurrection is told. It had to make the list because it is upbeat and creative.

“Risen” by Israel Houghton and New Breed

Israel’s music has a unique and beautiful way of making you feel closer to Jesus. This is because he usually reminds us of our power and of Jesus’ presence in all of us.

“Risen” has so much soul, grandness and spirit. It’s definitely one of my favorites.

Which song is your favorite? Which song did you hear for the first time? Share in the comments.

I hope these Gospel songs bring you and your family joy this Easter Sunday!
