The Joy of Holy Saturday

Holy Week is my favorite time of the liturgical year.

There’s nothing else like it. After the somber season of Lent, I love the Catholic traditions during Holy Week and how the Easter Triduum, which includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil, is such a unique experience. I like the selfless act of washing one another’s feet at Holy Thursday and venerating the cross to remember Christ’s journey on Good Friday.

But my favorite part of the Triduum is Holy Saturday, when we celebrate the Easter Vigil.

It is the longest Mass of the year, but it is worth every moment. I love hearing the readings in darkness and lighting our candles. I love when the church lights up and we sing Alleluia together to celebrate Christ. I’ve seen joyous tears when we welcome new members into the faith. It is a special celebration.

One of my favorite moments of the Easter Vigil Mass is the Litany of Saints, where we acknowledge wonderful examples of Christ’s love before baptizing new Catholics. It’s such a poetic moment – to remember those who came before us and celebrate those who are coming into the church.

Easter in 2020 was the first year I didn’t celebrate Holy Week in person with friends and family. Due to the pandemic, parishes were closed for in-person Masses. But the hope of Christ reminded me that what I was experiencing was temporary and that things would soon turn around.

I’m sure most of us didn’t think we would be celebrating virtually again in 2021, as many parishes were opened at limited capacity. But Christ’s resurrection reminds us that difficult times do not last. Joy will come soon.

For Catholics, Easter is a joyous and holy day. But Holy Saturday will always have a special place in my heart. It is a holy night where our faith comes full circle.

Happy Easter to you and your family!
